[ Sharp and hot. Weiss raises Myrtenaster up and uses her full body weight to slam the tip down and through the ice, probably a couple of inches before either of his legs in the middle, then slowly lets some of the red dust trickle out so it heats up her sword rather than causes a fire. Very rapidly, it starts to melt and Weiss slowly starts to move Myrtenaster through the ice and around his legs. She doesn't go all the way down to his legs, just enough that it looks like the ice has weakened significantly, then she turns back and goes around the other side before pulling it out and backing up. ]
Okay, stand up straight and kick your feet a few times, it should break up.
It's grey and looks nothing like food. You don't think it does?
[Most of his effort is made toward staying calm and keeping his balance and not screwing it up for Weiss. He flinches when he first hears the slam and stands back up to follow her directions.
He kicks the ice way too hard, a few chunks flying.]
Thanks.
[He's annoyed with himself but he's trying not to show it. He withdraws the rest of the Dust he...borrowed, offering it to her.]
I'm going to have to take you out for some real food one of these days. Fried tofu isn't gray, it's golden on the outside and a pure white on the inside. If your tofu is gray, it's probably spoiled.
[ She takes the ice, then takes about ten steps backward, then looks at Jaune. ]
Take two steps to the left and stand still.
[ She's turning the revolver on Myrtenaster to green. ]
I'm braci--[That's definitely the wind in his face and a stronger attack than what he was thinking. Caught off guard, he's nearly blown back, but he saves himself and keeps his feet grounded, blocking as much of the attack as he can with both arms.]
[ So the 'gray' form that Jaune saw it in isn't even close to ready to eat. Whatever. After a brief second she very quickly drops some red dust with the wind, just barely enough to make the wind warm. It goes on for a little while until she pauses and puts her sword down. ]
[He has his face covered, so he can't see, but he does feel the shift in temperature. So this wasn't sparring, but something else. He lowers his arms and just stands there. His hair is probably a mess by the time Weiss is finished, but he's dry.
[ She puts Myrtenaster at her hip and moves back over to him. ]
Of course not, but I don't have a portable blow-dryer and towel with me at work. This was just easier particularly since you need to understand more about Dust and I'm not going to let you run off after a stunt like this.
Does it taste better than the plain stuff? I heard you can flavor it different ways.
I'll admit I should have waited to use it somewhere less crowded than here. Like a park or something. But I actually did think about this before I tried it. I guess at least I learned Dust makes a good substitute for a blow-dryer.
Completely better. You're supposed to cook it in things and it absorbs the flavor. Then you can fry it and it gets crispy on the outside and has all the flavor of whatever you cooked it next to without all the fat and calories.
[ She shakes her head. ] That's not what I meant. If you want to start learning, it's about time I started teaching you. It's been far too long since I've had someone actually interested in Dust. Sun and Yang don't use it and Blake... Blake hasn't been doing what we have and that's my fault, so she's been even more isolated than I have, which means I haven't had anyone to enjoy Dust with so if you're so interested you're going to freeze yourself to a street corner, you're going to learn. Come on. [ They're going to her car. ]
But if you cook it in meat won't it absorb some of the meat calories?
[He stalls there for a moment, trying to wrap his head around the fact that freezing himself on the sidewalk turned out to be a good thing. Weiss doesn't seem upset though, more motivated than anything.
...She did grow up the heiress to the most prevalent Dust company. He really shouldn't be as surprised as he is, and he wants to learn. Following her.]
[ Actually having something she's good at, the best at here? It's something she can find a small amount of satisfaction and pride in still. She's taking it where she can get it. ]
I don't follow. I think I'm okay with just eating it.
Aww. [He slumps, his disappointment more for show than anything. He actually feels like he's found some direction thanks to Weiss. He doesn't know how much it's helping her, and he isn't sure if he really thinks he has a chance to be good at anything, but he knows Weiss is incredibly skilled with Dust and he doesn't want to disappoint her.]
[ she rolls her eyes and unlocks the car doors, getting in the driver's seat. ]
Get a license and I will consider it but until you show me you actually know how, I'd like to keep my car in one piece. Now, tell me everything you remember about dust on the way. [ so she knows where to start ]
You know what, maybe I will. Maybe I will get a license and pass...the licensing exam. Dust is used for energy and combat, there are four main colors but there are other colors too. Powdered Dust like what I was using is a lot more dangerous and difficult to handle because it's so volatile. A weapon like Myrtenaster is safer if you know what you're doing, which you do, because you have it directed in a small space with more precision, so the impact is more precise. Crystalline Dust is still volatile, but easier to control. Dust bullets are even easier.
[ She listens to Jaune. He actually learned what she went over with him before, that's good. Okay. There's still a long ways to go, but it's obvious that Jaune's learning style and hers are.. vastly different. And he's getting impatient, which is the opposite of what you need to do with Dust.
Weiss thinks for a moment. ]
We need to get to Vale, are you going to be okay to pass through Fayren?
[ The amount of Dust they'll need to practice properly.. well, they can't exactly get around that. Dust is only available in Vale unless one of them is planning on opening up another subarchway just so they can run away. ]
In the town- we're not going anywhere that isn't populated, and Sun's all over that place during the day so if we need back-up, it's there. It's not even that far through Fayren to get there.
[He suddenly goes quiet, searching the outside scenery as if evading the question means he can avoid Fayren. He could. But if he did he would never become remotely skilled with Dust. Crocea Mors hadn't been his choice so much as convenient because he needed a weapon. Battler had taken that. He doesn't want him to take this too.]
I don't-- It's the only way we have, right? Let's just do this and get out of there as soon as we can. [He sounds terser than he had before.]
[ She starts the car and starts heading in that direction, quiet for a moment or two before piping up to share. ]
It was Fayren the first time for me, too. Fayren used to be one of my favorite places. Zuko was the Deputy Guardian for his sister. Then Torchwick took me and I didn't want to go back for a while, but I had to. It's easier because it's underground, so not seeing it made it easier not to think about. It's just... another subarchway; a separate area. The forest.. is more difficult. You can see it from anywhere in the town. So that, as unnerving as it may seem, is easier to think about because Battler's not dumb enough to stay in one place. There's no way he's still there, and the forest can't move. Nothing's coming out of it for me, everywhere else is okay. Vale is okay.
[ The last few parts, it's more like she's reassuring both of them. But this is one thing she has a little practice in. ]
[His fingers tense, curling around his sleeve. He doesn't seem to notice what he's doing.]
So psychopaths are attracted to Fayren. Okay. Good to know. Torchwick has a bad habit of announcing it when he arrives so he's not around. Stupid purple suit isn't around. We just have to get to Vale.
...If you ever wanna set another forest on fire I'll tell them I made you trip.
