[Satsuki left a message for Weiss whenever she checks in for her office.]
Lady Schnee, this is Satsuki Kiryuin. I thought it would be best to keep you aware of some of the projects I have been working on during my term. Of course you may do with the information as you see fit.
I had been interested in granting mundanes an opportunity to become active in the police force, so had placed the weapons development team in charge of creating an assist vehicle that would aid in sorties with higher risk of danger to them. Unfortunately they still suffer from taking damage from heavy fire too quickly.
I have been in talks with former Deputy Guardian Troy Dantes, who possesses technology that should provide better defense against the supernatural occurrences. He has 'donated' ten androids, flight capable, with the specific purpose of handling spirits and the like. The research team is in the process of understanding the technology behind it so that we can outfit others with similar weaponry.
Coincidentally he is a hard-working, honest, and rather resourceful man. In the event you have yet to decide upon a Deputy Guardian, I would highly recommend seeking him out.
I do not know if you are aware of Athrun Zula, but he possesses what is called a 'mobile suit' of armor called Infinite Justice. It stands taller than many buildings and I have been working with him to outfit a firearm similar to the droids mentioned above. We have reviewed the layout of the city and have determined that, as is, it will not be simple to move it about without causing some sort of structural damage. I have spoken with the city planner about the possibility of shifting the city's structure in the event it is needed.
Those are the higher priority matters. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
[ Weiss honestly appreciates the message. They may have had a rough patch with how things went during the election, and she's certainly not going to be able to be 100% okay with how Satsuki regards Sun, but she's definitely glad that Satsuki isn't going to leave her high and dry. It's good toward establishing that they still have a professional relationship. Weiss decides to call her back after making sure to dictate everything she said, then transform it into a to-do list. ]
Hi Satsuki. I just wanted to let you know that I'll certainly put Troy in consideration for Deputy Guardian. I haven't made any final decisions yet, but he was amongst the possibilities and from what I hear regarding your recommendation, he may be toward the top of the list. I appreciate it. I'll be following up on those other matters as well.
If I may ask, what are your plans now? I know you said there were a few things you wanted to pursue if you weren't in the position of City Guardian back when we spoke at the last Schnee Company gala. I'd be willing to provide support if there's anything I can assist with.
[Satsuki was expecting a response but she has to admit she wasn't expecting a callback to the gala. That was quite some time ago, wasn't it? It's almost nostalgic.]
Lady Schnee,
I am glad I could be of assistance. There are a few things that I plan to accomplish.
On the 11th I will be holding a Coming of Age ceremony in hopes of inspiring that youth that have become adults to become a greater part of the community. I also plan to find work to, ideally, start in February.
[Though she's still the Headmaster of Second Honnouji, isn't she? Hmm.]
Aside from that, I am making preparations to continue my investigation. I had done some during the Vlad incident, but ultimately hit a dead end. I am uncertain at this time how you can assist, but the offer is greatly appreciated.
P.S. Some time ago someone brought up the subject of charms on the network. If you had all four, what would you wish for?
I heard about that in the newspaper. I'm afraid I'm not quite old enough to participate, but I hope it goes well.
[ She still had a few things that she was curious about that Satsuki said back at the Gala. It's part of why she really wants her to pursue it and to help with it. ]
If I may ask, what happened during the Vlad investigation? Both with your investigation and with him specifically. He's.. attempted to help me with something, and I'm not sure whether I should trust him or not.
[ That last question's a tough one.. it takes Weiss a little while to come up with some answers. ]
I'd want to see Zuko again but I don't think I can ask for something that selfish. I'd probably ask for my letters to my sister back. I gave up every letter I wrote and my ability to write new ones to open the Beacon archway so we could easily move the weapons Guardian Haller had forged. It's a huntress's job to put the protection of others above her own, but if it were something like a wish, I'd want them back.
That is fine; I intend to make it an annual event. Still, thank you.
[Oh. Um. Wow. Satsuki didn't expect Weiss to get so personal about the wish thing, so now she doesn't feel like clarifying on the matter. Still, she feels she learned something important.
Well, besides Weiss' interaction with Vlad.]
I have no input to give on whether you should trust him or not, as I have little idea of his motives. Personally I would not, though that should surprise no one.
Heartfilia, her partner and I were looking for a way to link the increased damage of the barrier to him. She was told by the spirit that it was his doing and while I am inclined to believe her, it is difficult to approach the matter without proof.
My theory was that since her magic deals with spirits of her world she might be able to find it again, but it did not seem to work. [Beat.] There is also the matter of the original barrier breaker still being about- but I have absolutely zero leads there. I had hoped that by contacting that spirit I could obtain answers on that matter as well.
[Beat.]
Hmn. Put that way, that would make sense as a wish.
If I'm still here next year I'll be sure to drop by.
[ Weiss doesn't particularly understand Vlad's motives at all either. When she asked about it, he simply said 'nostalgia' but.. that's got a lot more to do with what their meeting was about than in general. ]
He offered me a safe place and tried to train me, claiming it- [ She shakes her head. That isn't really Satsuki's business. That's something she can't even do yet anyway. ] I don't think I trust him, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't confused.
It isn't as though I trust those spirits any more than I trust him, though- if what they were doing was right, they wouldn't be trying to keep it a secret still. If there's one thing I've learned it's that when someone has done something wrong, they regret it unless they still think they might continue to do it. I'd be willing to trust anyone from Fairy Tail but the spirit that told them in the first place I'd be disinclined to consider a reliable source, regardless of Lord Tepes's stances. The barriers may be protecting us from the outside world, but they're also keeping us trapped in here. I know what it's like to be stuck some place only able to hear what the people in charge want you to know. It makes it impossible to make decisions on your own and even harder to exist outside of what ideas they want you to hear.
That's.. the individual who came out the first time the spirits broke through, before I was here, right? Sun told me about him. There wasn't any other evidence about what happened to him from the time of the first breach?
[ As for the wish, Weiss's... options, it's nothing she really has a reason to hide, she just doesn't bring it up unless asked. If it were about her father she'd be a lot more hesitant to say anything. It's not like letting someone she knows is a good person know about people she cares about that are worlds away is something she has a reason to hide. ]
At any rate, even if neither of those were options, I'd still try to choose something small like that. Anything truly worth having has to be earned, not handed to you because you traded in some trinkets.
[Satsuki assumes Weiss means an abrupt leave; as far as she's concerned there is nothing short of a miracle that will get them out of Genessia with their own power in a year.]
I do not believe there is any harm in being cautious; however you have proven to be both valuable and influential. Viewed from that angle it is less surprising that he has shown interest in you.
For the time being I am giving the spirits the benefit of the doubt. At worst, they would not provide information that goes against their interests. I am also willing to believe the situation is not so simple; if there is one thing I have learned it is that people tend to rebel against what they are forced to do, even if it is illogical to do so. Mind, I am not saying it is correct, per se, but it would go against their interests entirely to give an answer they likely will not approve of.
Wukong knew about him? [There's a moment of silence, then she looks visibly annoyed. She wasted a question that someone else already knew the answer to. That.. Is extremely aggravating. Satsuki has no one to blame but herself, of course, but she ends up falling silent for a moment anyway. Then,]
[ That's what she means as well. Even if they manage to get out, there's no guarantee that'll mean going home either.. or if that even means home, now that the GSRF is starting to uncover different sets of information. ]
I.. know why he's shown interest in me, just not why he'd care to try to teach me. I didn't think he'd be the type to want to help foster someone else's abilities after what I'd heard- particularly someone who'd rather protect humanity than destroy it. That goes against what he would've had to have been thinking if he actually did what the spirit claimed, doesn't it? Then again, he might've just been doing it as a subtle insult to Satchel. It's hard to say.
[ The fact that Satsuki seems surprised about Sun knowing just goes to show that Weiss was right: their feud was a hindrance. ] Unless you two aren't speaking of the same person, yes, he did. He told me during the latest breach.
Take it from someone who's intentionally abandoned everything being handed to me on a platter: I'm far more happy now than I was then, even with everything I've gone through and even if it would've been easier and safer to do things the other way.
His motives are unclear in both cases. In your case, I would simply advise that you be very careful. In my case his will remain unclear unless I possess some sort of evidence that proves he was involved. In my eyes it does not matter if it goes against he says or believes for the simple reason that Genessia is not our home.
[Satsuki is quiet again, accompanied by a rapid tapping of her finger upon the desk.]
I was one of the people that sacrificed a memory to help reseal the barrier of the most recent breach, and was rewarded with an answer to a question. The answer I was given matches up. It had not occurred to me that someone here would have already known it.
[She raises a brow.]
Really. I wonder if you would have abandoned it if there were no stigma attached to that platter.
Debatably not our home. [ Weiss corrects it, but the GSRF's report hasn't come out at this point. since liv's post would've been a couple of days after this thread probably She's not sure if she even should explain, but Weiss gets access to all of the GSRF's work so she's been keeping track of it even if she's sure that the employees will be announcing it soon. ]
Believe me when I say we all appreciate the sacrifice even if the question was a dumb one. I don't want to say "I told you so" about mending bridges, so I'll refrain from it, but just know that the sentiment is there.
[ That was the most roundabout way to say that. ]
I left home before I was even willing to admit that was a problem. Most people still have a problem accepting Faunus, that's why it's so easy for my father to get away with. The "stigma" wouldn't exactly be anything I couldn't handle. I know what I think is right and wrong now, but that's not something I would've been able to establish in that home.
Debatably? [ Well that's an interesting twist. Granted, she doesn't really know what to make of it either.] Hmn.
For me it is not a matter of my actions being appreciated or not; I loathe wasting resources. Coincidentally that is also why I have difficulty following your stance on abandoning Schnee Company; it all seems a massive waste to me, but I also confess I am likely missing a lot of perspective.
So you may understand why I view your wish as wasteful, and while your advice is sound, I believe it completely ignores the reality of our situation. As does your sentiment. Where I am from, idiots are placed on the bottom rung of society, and it appears to me your world does not run on hierarchy. What is your secret to tolerating it?
Something the GSRF is working on says we're all children somehow or other. Honestly, one of them can explain it better than I can, but there's some debate for exactly what the results mean.
I'm not abandoning it. For the time being, suffice it to say I'd rather have you working on things that you said you weren't able to accomplish with the position of Guardian and I have a few things I'd like to establish that I can't do as a private company CEO without delving into the realm of corruption. I'm sure you've noticed there are plenty of people lining up to attempt to knock me down if I step wrong.
[ Weiss has to think about that answer for a moment. Ruby is her biggest example of that behavior. ]
Intelligent people don't discount learning from all parts of society, not just those that already share their views of the world. I suppose my secret to tolerating them is that I'm open to learning what qualities beyond generic intelligence can make a person worth being around.
[Satsuki ends up taken aback for a moment. There are several things discouraging her right now, but for whatever reason Weiss' words strike her with inspiration.]
I will be certain to look into it. And, 'abandon' was a poor word of choice. In the end I suppose that part does not really matter. More important is that we do our parts to the fullest extent of our ability.
[Though she might argue that support Weiss has would make going against her an extremely poor political move. Another topic for another time perhaps. As for discounting learning from all parts of society.]
Naturally you must be privy to the behavior and desires of all parts if you are to properly manipulate them. Genessia's social structure is.. Something. I am still uncertain what to make of it. Perhaps I did not ask the correct question, as you and I's ideas of what makes a person 'worth being around' differ significantly.
[beat.]
Still, taking it at face value, I must concede that your strategy worked and I do not think I can replicate it. It is infuriating, really.
I would say that's why my strategy worked better right there, Satsuki. I wasn't trying to manipulate anyone, I was just being honest. I don't learn about others because I want to use them, I learn about them because I understand that I'm not perfect, nor am I always right. Being intelligent and talented doesn't make me either of those things.
[ A beat, then Weiss adds. ] You probably would've won if you hadn't gone after Sun and that weird reporter didn't start making up lies about me, by the way. Whoever that reporter was, you should probably find them and ask them why they were trying to conspire against you. There were plenty of negative things that could've been said about me and not a single one of them actually came up, just ones that made you look dishonest.
I find that being the reason of your success unlikely; I am hardly what you would call 'unsuccessful'. I also do not believe that 'manipulation' and 'honesty' are mutually exclusive concepts. If that is why you choose to learn about others then so be it, but the results are the same.
Perhaps. But you know what being intelligent and talented does get you? It creates the Welcoming Center. It creates Scientific Research centers. It creates things that PROGRESS our situation.
I just..
[Satsuki draws in her lips for a moment, and raises a fist to her mouth. Her frustration surges for a moment as her brows furrow, though eventually resigns.]
... I don't know.
I can agree to the latter, which I have already looked into. He is a troublemaking reporter from my world. I would go so far as to agree to the former. While those events did not do me any favors, I personally believe the campaign tipped in your favor the moment I agreed to a peaceful campaign.
Either way, that is in the past now.
Edited (I have words and I must use them) 2016-02-06 02:14 (UTC)
Then as someone who is also intelligent and talented, I expect you'll use this opportunity to create progress in your own way.
[ She nods, rolling her eyes.] I'd hardly call them an actual reporter. You have to report something factual before I'd be willing to refer to anyone like that.
It was nice to hear from you, Satsuki. I was sure you weren't going to be very happy with me after the election.
[In her own way? That actually brings a bit of a smile to Satsuki's features.]
I had best not disappoint, then.
[Then a nod.]
It goes without saying that I was upset, however I believe moving forward would prove a more productive action. Until we meet again, Lady Schnee, and best of luck to you.
