[ Weiss wraps up the paperwork she was working on before he arrives. It's not so much actual paper as holographic files, but the work still has to be done and it has to be done for more than twice the number of deputies the other cities have. Thankfully, Weiss loves organization and meticulous work. She's just closing one up as the receptionist leads him into her office. ]
[He may be quite the sight, being an over seven foot cyborg and quite an imposing figure with his skeletal-like appearance. A sweeping cloak covers his back and shoulders. Of course this appearance might also work in his favour if you wanted to intimate troublemakers without even lifting a finger. He's polite enough, though, in greeting.]
[ If this had been when Weiss had first arrived, he might've startled her. But two of her previous deputies were a giant tree alien named Artanis and a giant ice man named Kuzan. The cloak is a new addition, of course, though she's got more than enough experience with people enjoying their billowing capes with her partner from home.
That said, Weiss doesn't seem remotely bothered by the fact that he's easily two feet taller than she is when she stands up. ]
That's me. They do need to be updated slightly, but I need to speak with my brother before we do anything. [ She wants to remain the face, largely because certain people with massive egos and/or powers tend to decide that she's the one who rules this land without actually listening to the hologram. She can defend herself, Whitley can't.
She takes a brief curtsy, clearly a practiced and perfected motion. ]
So you are the Guardian over Nova City. I had met some of the deputies upon my arrival. They may not all be the most civil of creatures but they all seem to have one thing in common. They want to protect the city.
While I am here that will also be my aim. Currently I am working in security, however when this position arose I felt that it would be an even better fit for somebody of my qualifications.
Some of my deputies can be a little.. protective. [ she inclines her head slightly. Her tone days she thinks that should've had "over" before that word. ] Whether or not it's necessary.
[ she gestures to a large chair in the meeting area of her office. It was kuzan's but since he was gone there was no reason not to let grievous use it. ]
Why don't you go ahead and tell me about your qualifications, then I'll have some questions for you. Keep in mind that I do look for more than combative capabilities- most people here can fight, I need to know what you'll bring to the team beyond that.
[With all his cybernetic enhancements he rarely needs to rest but he does seat himself to be polite. His long limbs do make it all look a bit awkward though.]
I have been in many wars and led both my own people and a vast army of droids, the greatest the galaxy has ever seen. I am known for my strategy and tactics as well as my expert fighting skills with blasters and lightsabers. My own natural skills have been further enhanced and upgraded with this mechanical body.
[There's an oddly bitter inflection when he says the last couple of words, followed by some brief coughing as if the very words have aggravated him. But he goes on.]
But you want to know more about my fighting skills. Tell me what else is required in this role and I will answer what I can.
[ Strategy and tactics are certainly something she's looking for. Fighting skills are great, but like she said- most people can fight here, many on god-tier levels. That's why it's so important to get people with a wider skill set than just physical capabilities.
She notices the cough, but elects not to bring it up. He can have his cough without questions just like she'd prefer no one ask about the scar over her eye. ]
All of Genessia's cities contain residents from other worlds. Many of those worlds have individuals with powers beyond your wildest imagination- for every strength a person has, there are ten stronger here. The ability to fight, even expertly, is not always as valuable as being smarter, faster, more resourceful or creative. It's important to be able to protect people from that which is stronger than any of us individually. What is it that you'll bring to this team that you believe no one else can?
[Before his transformation, he was considered the greatest warrior and leader in his homeworld and they did eventually rise him to the level of a legendary god, so he certainly has the fighting skills to back it up and can hold his own on many occasions. As for the cough, it's something he plans to deal with, planning on finding a healer that can deal with both the biological and mechanical parts to fix and improve himself further, if possible.]
I believe I can formulate the best tactics to overcome any threat we may face here, whether it is a forward offensive or a cautious retreat to regroup and discover the enemies weaknesses.
[Annoyingly, this tactic has in some circles earned him the slur of coward - but running from a failing battle does keep people alive to fight another day and he finds it sometimes to be the best strategy to come back stronger. Sometimes you had to know when to not fight beyond your capabilities and throw away everything for needless heroics.]
I could meet with your other deputies to discover their skills and figure out during a battle where they are most needed, while providing support of my own.
[ Judging by the expression on her face, cowardice isn't what Weiss thinks of when he says that. Fight when you have to, if you can win another way, that's what she'd prefer. It's what she's done many times here since she knows she's not the strongest warrior around. Her skills lie in organization, team support, intellect, precision, flexibility... and while she's decent at strategy, having someone with more experience is certainly a desirable qualification.
She doesn't tell him that though. She's got more questions. ]
Where is the line between justice, the law, and protecting citizens for you?
I expect those three things would have a correlation here. Those who break the laws of the city should be brought to justice therefore protecting the other citizens.
I have no army here and no others of my kind and our ways may not be the same as yours but I have had to adapt in the past.
[He indicates his structure; his body, as he says the next part.]
This is not my original form. I had to adapt to this and the ways of those I served as head of their new army.
I can also do so here. Here, the citizen's safety would be a priority as there is no war. So I would do my utmost to see to their protection.
[This may be a more roundabout answer than she was expecting.]
Citizen's protection is the priority regardless of whether a war breaks out later or not.
[ She wants to be very specific about that. Weiss doesn't play around with that. ]
But those who are responsible for dispensing justice should be held accountable for their actions as well. We don't kill, and if we kill, the burden of responsibility to prove self-defense falls upon us. It is the absolute last course of action if possible. A lot of applicants have trouble understanding this concept, so I want you to tell me the truth. Can you agree to protect and uphold the laws and peoples' rights, even while capturing a criminal so far beneath you that you'd see them dead if it were your choice?
[ She knows that sounds dramatic, but the number of times she's gotten arguments about how she was being unfair by expecting people not to kill targets is surprising despite that Nova City has always had no death penalty. ]
[Coincidentally enough, he's already had to make that sort of choice here, so he doesn't even need to think very much about his answer.]
I have already dealt with such a criminal here and I gave him a warning to stay out of Nova City. I did not kill him, even though it was well within my power. His crimes are not yet of this world but I intend to keep an eye on him.
So I can agree to those conditions. Any who have broken the laws will be brought to the appropriate people to be dealt with as your laws see fit.
[If he's being attacked though of course he'll also defend himself - and he doesn't mention his temper - but he can follow these sorts of orders when he has to. Bring them in alive.]
[ It helps that they can call the robotic police force for back-up, which means there's camera footage when they're around, so if he needs to defend himself she's not worried about that with that sort of attitude. ]
I suppose that answers whether or not you understand that criminals are not criminals until they've broken the law here. Are you willing to work with former criminals?
[ ..Just something to check, considering one of her deputies. ]
If you are giving them a second chance at redemption, then so shall I.
[He understands enough that things are different here than how it is for anyone back in their respective homeworlds. Their actions here should be taken into account instead of dwelling on their past. Although, he will still have his grudges against any more Jedi that arrive here - as with Obi-Wan, he will try to restrain and restrict himself to warnings unless they start a fight with him themselves.]
Have you ever had to work with someone that you don't get along with? How did you solve disagreements with them?
[ She's mostly thinking about Mercury. She's not sure anyone really gets along with Mercury, and she'd prefer no one breaks the office furniture trying to kill each other in the Skyrise.
..but honestly, Satsuki can be incredibly judgy, and Jaune's kind of a mess most days, and Garrus is a pain in her ass personally so it's just best to check. ]
Many. But if we have a mutual goal to accomplish any personal disagreements can be put aside.
I did not agree with all the politics on either side of an ongoing war but I did not argue with my master over it. While all of our ideas did not match up, we had other mutually beneficial goals to achieve.
The goal here is the protection of the city and its inhabitants and so that must be the focus, leaving aside any other differences that may arise.
There was also an incident here upon my arrival. One of the deputies - a Jaune Arc I believe was the name - was very disrespectful to me but we did come to an understanding after we had a meeting in person.
[ That's good. It's a start. She's sure it'll work out. If not, they'll fight it out and work through it. She tilts her head. ]
That's fair. I didn't get along with Jaune for a long time because he kept ignoring my requests to cease certain.. behaviors, but he's gotten better since. I also didn't get along with..
[ She trails off. ] Well, what's important is arguments lead to greater understanding. [ HER ENTIRE FUCKING TEAM. BOTH HOME AND HERE... whatever they got over it and so did she. ] Moving along, do you have any particular species, social class, abilities, religions, or any other types of people you hold bias against or toward?
[ it's a question she has to ask. She's had her own biases in the past against Faunus and even telepaths, but more than that, Fayren, Nova City, and Everglade have all faced discrimination problems of their own sort. Weiss doesn't want that leaking into her team, and even if he lies, it'd mean he was hired under false pretenses if that was the case. she's at least guessing cyborgs won't be an issue but she doesn't want surprises. ]
There are perhaps two but I can give you good reasons to be wary and alert to their presence.
The Huk are a race of insect-like sentient beings but make no mistake that all they want is war and to enslave as many planets as they can get their claws on. Thankfully, I have seen no trace of them here.
The other is the Jedi.
[There is extra venom when he says that word. It's clearly very distasteful to him.]
There is but one of them currently in the city. As I mentioned before I have already given him a warning. They are dangerous creatures, thinking themselves better than others and judging without finding out all the facts. I know how to deal with them, should any more arrive.
[Private Voice message]
I can come to you now.
[Private Voice message]
[ He seems very on top of this job after all.. ]
[Private Voice message]
[So he's very well acquainted by now with the sights.]
