[Jacques stares at the peep hole, mouth agape and floundering like a fish as he tries to figure out what to say. His voice sounds almost broken when he finally finds it.]
Weiss, darling, I am so, so sorry for what I did. I don't know what came over me, but you know that your happiness means the world to me, don't you? If you and Sun love each other then of course you should marry him. He's a wonderful young man. I don't know why I tried to stop it but I... [He holds up the bear so she can see the message on it.] I brought you a bear.
[ She doesn't actually know what to do right now. If he really cares, that would be great. But she doesn't believe that- she's not going to let herself get convinced that this is happening for any reason other than that he realized if Weiss says anything to anyone, his world is going to come crashing down. That has to be it. ]
The same thing that always comes over you. You don't care about anyone other than yourself, the only reason you care now is because I got away. I don't want your bear and I don't want your apology. Leave.
[To call Jacques' face crestfallen would be an understatement. The idea that she wouldn't want to talk to him was there, but he honestly thought she'd at least be willing to hear him out; it's unlike him to put anything before his children's happiness, and she knows it deep down. She's just upset still.]
Snowflake, you know that's not true! I would do anything for you! Don't you remember how I almost lost my position on the board because I told them that your concert was more important to me? I know what I did was wrong and you can't know how sorry I am. Work has just been so stressful recently and I guess I snapped, but thank goodness your friend Jaune was there to beat some sense back into me, even if he did take it a little too far.
[He sighs, placing the bear by the door and slipping the tickets inside.]
I had been hoping to take you and your fiance out to brunch and the opera, but... The reservation is at 12 at Chez Montaigne and the opera is at 7. Invite whomever you want, I guess.
[He casts one more look at the door, hoping it will open, but it looks like it's remaining firmly shut. He casts his eyes downwards and turns away, ready to give up.]
[ What is going on? What.. She doesn't- Okay, something is wrong, obviously, and she needs to help him. She needs to calm down and stop wishing that what he were saying was true and wipe the tears that are peeking out of the corners of her eyes and- wait ]
Jaune did what?
[ SHe opens the door, looking a cross of confused and upset and surprised and she doesn't know what to do- ]
I don't know what's wrong with you but this isn't okay. I don't ever remember that happening, and pretending like everything is okay and always has been-- [ Her throat closes up a little bit and she looks away. ] You tried to erase the parts of me you don't like, Father. That's not love.
[She's opened the door! There's hope yet! He turns back to face her and takes a step towards her. He wants to embrace her and do whatever he can to make it right, but he has a feeling that she doesn't want to be touched right now so his hands are just kind of awkwardly in front of him.]
He attacked me, Weiss, but it was to make me realize what a mistake I had made. I can't believe I tried to change you - heck, I don't even know why I would attempt such a thing. Sweetie, you're perfect just the way you are. You know that, don't you? You're such a strong, beautiful woman and I couldn't be more proud of you.
I won't pretend it didn't happen, but I don't want to lose what we have, either. Remember all those Sundays spent together at the park? Your tenth birthday when you couldn't decide which cake you wanted so I arranged a whole spread instead? I even made that big banner for you when you competed at Beacon and took you and your friends out to that pasta place you loved so much! [She definitely doesn't remember any of this, but he doesn't know that.] I made a terrible, awful mistake, but please don't cut me out of your life for it, Weiss. Just tell me how to make it right.
uhhh one lil spoiler for volume 5 episode 8 in here in case anyone is stalking
[ Was he just.. trying to make her think she'd gone crazy? Changing her memories didn't work, so just pretending reality was different? Was that the new plan? Weiss doesn't let go of the door, her hand shaking a little. She can't tell if it's fear or anger or what. ]
There were no Sundays, Father. The last birthday I had that wasn't just a show you put on was when you told Mother you didn't love her, and you never set foot in Beacon until it was burning to the ground.
[ Her hand tightens on the doorknob to try to stop the shaking. Stay strong Weiss. ]
Don't... don't try to convince me I'm crazy, please.
[Was he the crazy one? No, they definitely happened. He remembered them all so vividly. The doctors told himt hat she might have some memory loss, but they assured him that it was short term only]
Weiss, why would I lie about that? I know you're confused, but none of that's true. Your mother and I are still very much in love - I took her on a romantic dinner cruise and got her that sapphire necklace she had been eyeing up for our anniversary last year. We were at Beacon during the tournament. Whitley too. You sacrificed yourself to save your friend. Don't you remember that?
[Maybe he should call the doctor and have her checked out...]
[ She just shakes her head, taking a step back and moving like she's going to close the door. ]
I can't do this. You need to leave.
[ "Don't you remember that?" Who's fault would it be if she didn't? What if he's telling the truth and her whole head is just...
But her white board had that note on it still not to trust Jacques. That she wrote down, that she knew was real. Someone would've corrected her on it if it was wrong, and it was still there. ]
He lifts an arm up halfway as if to stop her before slowly lowering it again. He looks down and closes his eyes, trying to maintain is composure and not breakdown on the doorstep. After a moment he gives the smallest of nods followed by the smallest of voices.]
Okay. If that's what you want, I'll go.
[He turns around, back facing her, and whispers one last thing before heading back to the car.]
[ Sorry, Nice!Jacques. You might have to try again later. She's pretty sure that he's trying to convince her she's losing her damn mind right now and she's already not got a good foothold on that, and it just... she can't handle being pushed like that right now. So she slams the door and locks it again. ]
Leave!
[ She yells it from behind the door as he apologizes, trying to hold back a sob. What else is she supposed to do? She's been burned too many times to not think it's just some kind of fucked up head game he's playing to try to get her back under his thumb again.
He walks back to the car, head bowed to try to hide the tears in his eyes. He fucked up. He fucked up so badly and now his baby girl won't even see him. The door is opened for him and he hesitates, hoping to hear his Weiss tell him to wait, but after a second he gives up, squeezes his eyes shut, and gets in the car.
The teddy remains by the door in case she decides to at least use those tickets. It'd be such a waste if she doesn't - he'd reserved the entire box for the three of them.]
[After he leaves and all, Sun gets to the door where Weiss is with Myrtenaster in hand. He had placed his device down and didn't actually think something urgent like her douchebag Daddy would show up again after everything he's done.]
Weiss! Are you okay?! [Jacques doesn't appear to be in the house and Weiss is still here, so he figures she didn't let him in (and that he didn't kidnap her, obviously.)]
[ What in the hell was she supposed to say to that. ]
He's not a good person. Not the kind of person who would tell me he loves me and bring teddy bears to apologize and invite us to the opera. So everything he kept saying- he never went to Beacon during the Vytal Festival or missed a meeting with the board to go to my recitals. Those were lies, I didn't just forget. Tell me he's lying.
[ Just tell her she's not losing her mind, Sun. She's had so many memory issues lately that she doesn't have the confidence not to somewhat doubt this even if she knows not to trust Jacques. ]
He's lying, Weiss. [While the two of them might not have been close on their home world, he'd definitely remember if her Dad showed up to the Vytal Festival. Someone that big showing up would have stirred up a bunch of press.]
I don't know what he's trying to gain from you by telling you false things, but we aren't know we can't trust him or anything that leaves his mouth.
I told him to leave but I think that bear is still outside.
[ At least with Sun's reassurance she has some kind of grounding. She moves closer to Sun and takes Myrtenaster from him, the little Knight she's summoned finally disappearing now that she feels a little less under threat. ]
Why can't he just leave us alone? Do you think we can file a restraining order against the city's mayor?
